Raleigh-Wake County, NC - The Home Builders Association (HBA) of Raleigh-Wake County is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2024 HBA Family Scholarship, awarding a total of $6,000 to three outstanding students. The recipients were selected based on their significant contributions to their schools and communities, along with their demonstrated leadership capabilities.

Leah Busse, daughter of Patrick Busse from Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, Inc., residing in Wake Forest, has been awarded a scholarship. Leah, a student at Heritage High School of Wake Forest, has exhibited leadership and determination with a GPA of 2.6. She plans to pursue studies in either Architectural Engineering Technology or Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technology at Wake Tech Community College in the fall of 2024. Leah's dedication to exploring her career options through professional job shadowing showcases her commitment to her future. Her business marketing teacher describes Leah as respectful, diligent, and a great advocate for herself, qualities essential for her future studies.

Kadence Reyes, daughter of Karen Reyes from Builders Mutual Insurance Company, residing in Holly Springs, is another deserving recipient. Kadence, a student at Apex Friendship High School, boasts an impressive GPA of 4.52 and has been accepted to multiple universities for the 2024/2025 school year, including UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, and East Carolina University. Kadence's involvement in various extracurricular activities, including Health Occupations Students of America, varsity women's tennis, AFHS Key Club, and Apex Youth Council, highlights her commitment to both academic excellence and community service. She plans to pursue a Nursing major, aspiring to become a registered nurse and a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Her Health Science II Honors teacher describes her as polite, considerate, and a hard worker with an eye for detail, qualities that will undoubtedly serve her well in her chosen field.

Christine Zahuranec, a 2024 HBA Workforce Development Scholarship Recipient and member of HBA of Raleigh-Wake County through Traditions in Tile at Brier Creek, resides in Raleigh. Christine's dedication to her community and her field of study is commendable. She has been a member of the HBA's Remodelers Council, serves as the President of the Eastern Carolina Chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, and is a member of the Wake Forest High School Design and Construction Academy Board. Despite the challenges, Christine has been diligently pursuing her Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration degree for twenty years, with only six classes left. Her ambition doesn't end there; she plans to pursue an MBA and possibly a PhD, with aspirations for study abroad and teaching Kitchen and Bath Design courses for Wake Tech. Christine's dedication to her education and her field exemplifies the spirit of the HBA Family Scholarship.

The HBA Family Scholarship selection criteria include a strong contribution to the school/community (60%), leadership capabilities (20%), and GPA/Class Rank/SAT (20%). Applicants must be the child or grandchild of a current HBA of Raleigh-Wake County member, be a graduating high school senior, and plan to attend college, university, or trade school beginning in the fall semester of 2024.

In order to qualify, applicants were required to submit a completed application, a letter from the student, a letter of reference from the school, a transcript with GPA/Class Rank/SAT information, and a copy of the Financial Aid Form if available. Students with financial need were given preference.
