In Honor of 1st Lt Matthew R. Davis
• Matthew Davis was born and raised in Drexel Hill, located in the Delaware Valley of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania suburbs. Following the attacks on 9/11, Matt wanted to enlist in the Marine Corps and serve his country. However, he made a promise to his mother that he would graduate college first. Upon completion of bachelor’s degree in criminal law and justice from Pennsylvania State University in May of 2006, he enlisted into the Marine Corps and left for Parris Island that October.
• During his enlisted years, Matt served as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Marine. Often referring to himself as a “Chemical Grunt.” In 2007 he served at Headquarters Battalion, First Marine Division aboard Camp Pendleton, California. In 2008 he was assigned to 2/7 aboard Twentynine Palms, California, where he would deploy on the 31st Marine Expeditionary unit (MEU) twice. Following his meritorious promotion to Sergeant, Matt was accepted into the Enlisted Commissioning Program and attended Officer Candidacy School (OCS) at Quantico, Virginia. Following the completion of OCS, Matt attended the Basic School (TBS) and was selected to serve as an infantry officer. The then 2nd Lt graduated from Infantry Officer Course (IOC) and was given orders to 2/5 aboard Camp Pendleton.
• Matt checked into 2/5 in March of 2013, where he was assigned to Company F, and took command of First Platoon. As First Platoons Commander, Matt led his Marines in the conduct of Exercise Dawn Blitz, Expeditionary Warfare Training Groups Pacific’s Infantry Small Boat Raids Course, and the I Marine Expeditionary Force Special Operations Training Group Raids Course. Additionally, he graduated from Helicopter Rope Suspension Technique Master Course, allowing the company to fulfill its secondary heliborne company mission essential task. On deployment in support of the 31st MEU (for a third time), Matt led his Marines on multiple training evolutions. As the assault element for the small craft raid company, Matt’s Marine’s played an integral role for the company throughout six small craft raids including the Fox Company’s Certification Exercise (CERTEX). Second Lieutenant Davis was promoted to First Lieutenant in March of 2014. Matt Assumed duties as Executive Officer to Fox Company in June of 2014 and played a critical role in the development and execution of training and preparation for what would have been his fourth deployment at the end of 2014.
• On Friday, November 7, 2014, 1st Lt Matthew Davis was killed while standing regimental duty on Camp Pendleton, California. Early that evening his wife, Elizabeth Davis, had stopped by to share dinner. Neither of them could imagine that meal would be their last together. Before Elizabeth would arrive at their home near La Costa, Matt would be struck and killed by a drunk driver.
